Good news — just because the Tower is off-limits doesn’t mean your grad photos have to suffer. I’ve been a professional UT photographer for the past three years, and I’ve found some incredible secret spots across campus — places you probably haven’t even thought about. Some even hint at the Tower, but don’t rely on it as the main feature.
Just because the Tower’s under construction doesn’t mean I can’t work my magic.
Here are some of my favorite go-to locations that are just as stunning — and bonus: they don’t revolve around the Tower as the center of attention. And trust me… I’ve got even more hidden gems waiting if you book a session with me.
East Mall
Just steps from the Tower, East Mall offers dreamy golden hour light between 5:30 and 6:30 PM. The tree-lined walkway creates gorgeous depth and bokeh — especially stunning with a low-aperture lens. With a mix of shade and glow, it’s ideal for flattering portraits, even on harsh sunny days. As the Tower undergoes renovations, this nearby gem has become a go-to alternative for capturing UT pride.
Batts Hall Courtyard
This is my secret go-to for a clean, minimal, and modern look. Bathed in shade, it’s the perfect first stop on a sunny day — no squinting or harsh shadows. The neutral white background pops beautifully against white outfits and creates subtle leading lines for a sleek aesthetic. It doesn’t scream “UT,” which makes it ideal for professional headshots or LinkedIn photos without the stole. A versatile spot that adds quiet sophistication to any grad gallery.
Homer Rainy Hall
Tucked beside Littlefield Fountain, this spot comes alive during golden hour. The sunlight filters through the trees, casting a warm glow and beautiful foliage all around. With soft leading lines from the walkway and a peaceful, natural vibe, it’s perfect for timeless portraits. While it doesn’t feature the Tower, it adds a quiet elegance that balances out more traditional UT spots.
MoodY Bridge
A bold and modern backdrop, Moody Bridge is a must for Moody College grads — especially Communications and RTF students. Its sleek design stands out from the usual UT scenery, making it perfect for showing off school pride or adding visual variety. The best time to shoot here is closer to sunset or on a cloudy day, since the lighting can get harsh midday. When timed right, it delivers striking, editorial-style photos that pop.
UT Emblem (Behind the Stadium)
Hidden just behind the stadium, this emblem spot is a favorite among UT football fans. It’s bold, classic, and full of school spirit. If you’re lucky, you might even sneak a few shots inside the stadium — I’ve only managed it once before getting kicked out, but the photos were so worth it. This spot is included in my three-hour grad package and adds that iconic, sporty UT edge to your session.
Inside the Tower
If you can access the inside of the Tower, head to the third floor — it’s a hidden gem. The space features stunning ceilings and elegant architecture that give your photos a timeless, classy feel. It’s darker indoors, so using flash really makes the images pop. While more subtle than shooting outside the Tower, it still captures that iconic UT atmosphere in a unique and elevated way.
Goldsmith Hall
Tucked near the School of Architecture, Goldsmith Hall offers a stunning and underrated plaza with tons of photo variety. You’ll find ivy-covered walls, a charming fountain, and two standout architectural features: a stately iron gate and a bold glass-blue door that makes any photo pop. With soft, even lighting and plenty of greenery, this spot is a favorite for clean, creative shots — especially if you want something modern yet timeless.
Bonus: Inside the UT Stadium
If you can score access to the inside of the UT Stadium, your photos will be next-level. Usually, you’ll need to know someone on the team or be a student-athlete — but sometimes, you just get lucky like we did during this shoot. For football fans, this spot is a dream. The stadium backdrop is bold, powerful, and instantly iconic to UT — making it one of the most unforgettable locations you could have in your grad photo gallery.
